South Korea's Opposition Calls MPs to Parliament Following Martial Law Decision

The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) urgently called its lawmakers to the National Assembly late Tuesday following President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of emergency martial law. The DP instructed its legislators to organize a meeting to discuss and initiate the necessary procedures for the lifting of the martial law.

DP leader Lee Jae-myung described Yoon's emergency martial law proclamation as "unconstitutional" and condemned it as an action "against the people." Lee stated, "President Yoon declared emergency martial law without cause. Tanks, armored vehicles, and armed soldiers will soon control the country."

The ruling party's chairman Han Dong-hoon stated that President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law was "wrong" and that he would work with the public to "prevent" it. In a statement made shortly after Yoon's announcement, Han of the People Power Party emphasized the need to eliminate pro-North Korean forces and defend the free constitutional order.
