Workers in Greece Strike Over Cost of Living Crisis

In Greece, public and private sector workers went on a 24-hour general strike today. Public transport in Athens was suspended for several hours, and ferries connecting the islands to the mainland were docked.

Healthcare staff in state hospitals and teachers also participated in the strike, which was called by trade unions to protest the rising cost of living and to demand the restoration of collective wage agreements that were reduced during Greece's financial crisis, which began in 2010 and lasted nearly a decade.

Journalists working for Greek media outlets also went on a 24-hour strike on Tuesday in solidarity, halting all news broadcasts to cover the general strike on Wednesday. Protests are planned in central Athens on Wednesday. Unions are criticizing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's center-right government for failing to address inflation and housing policies that erode workers' living standards.
