China Calls for Ceasefire in the Middle East
China has urgently called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take action to achieve a ceasefire in the Middle East, prevent loss of lives, and restore peace.
Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, addressed an open session of the UNSC regarding the situation in the Middle East yesterday. Fu noted that due to the continuous escalation of tensions in the region, it is imperative for the Security Council to act immediately to establish a ceasefire, prevent casualties, and reestablish peace. He emphasized that an urgent and lasting ceasefire is a precondition to avert loss of life and prevent the escalation of tensions.
Recalling the United States' announcement to resume ceasefire negotiations, Fu expressed hope that this process would not fall back into the deadlock it has been in for several months. He also stated that China would support any measures the Security Council takes towards a ceasefire.
Highlighting the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as the backbone of humanitarian efforts in Gaza, Fu condemned Israel's attempts to restrict and shut down UNRWA despite widespread objections from the international community.
Fu Cong also pointed out the looming threat of a comprehensive regional war, calling on all parties to act with restraint and resolve disagreements through political and diplomatic means in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
