Rainfall in Turkey This October Falls Below Normal and Last Year's Levels

Forex - Precipitation in Turkey for October was below the norm and last year's levels. The "2024 October Area Precipitation Report" has been published. Accordingly, the precipitation for October was reported as 26.8 mm, while the normal for October (1991-2020) was 49.4 mm, and the precipitation for October 2023 was 36.6 mm. There was a 46% decrease compared to the norm and a 27% decrease compared to last year's October precipitation.

Precipitation in Turkey for October has been below the norm for the past six years. In October, precipitation showed more than a 60% decrease compared to normal in all regions of Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, and the western and southern parts of Eastern Anatolia, while in the coastal areas of the Black Sea, as well as around Kars, Ağrı, and Iğdır, there were localized increases of up to 80%. Overall, all regions except for the Black Sea received below-normal precipitation, with the Aegean Region experiencing the most significant decrease at 95%. October precipitation in the Aegean Region has reached its lowest level in the last 40 years, and in the Marmara Region, it has hit the lowest level in the last 23 years.

The highest precipitation was recorded in Rize at 331.4 mm, while the highest increase compared to the norm was 93% in Bartın. The least precipitation was 0.3 mm in Aydın and Muğla, with the greatest decrease compared to the norm at 99% occurring in Muğla. Regions such as Gaziantep and Kilis saw 65 mm, Karaman saw 60 mm, and İzmir, Aydın, Kütahya, Manisa, Muğla, Uşak, Denizli, and Burdur saw 40 mm, with major cities including Afyonkarahisar, Balıkesir, Bilecik, Bursa, Çanakkale, Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Istanbul, Yalova, and Eskişehir recording their lowest October precipitation in the last 23 years. Bartın, on the other hand, experienced its highest October precipitation in the last 65 years.

On average, there were 4.5 days of precipitation in Turkey during October (the 1991-2020 norm being 7.9 days). The number of rainy days in the coastal areas of the Black Sea was between 15-20 days, while in the southern parts of Izmir, northern parts of Antalya, Aydın, Manisa, Burdur, Mersin, Niğde, Gaziantep, Kilis, Adıyaman, and Şanlıurfa, no precipitation was recorded.
