Hungary's Orban: EU Must Reassess Sanctions Against Russia
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the European Union should reconsider its sanctions against Russia, as keeping energy prices high is obstructing the bloc's economic competitiveness. Orban emphasized, "Energy prices need to be lowered in every possible way. This means that the sanctions need to be reviewed, because under the current sanctions policy, energy prices will not decrease." He also mentioned that U.S. companies pay only a quarter of what European counterparts pay for gas and electricity, and this represents a disadvantage that cannot be overcome in any other way. While Western European countries are making serious efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy, landlocked Hungary sources 80-85% of its gas from Russia.
